Gear Base Layer

Polypropylene as a base layer or do I need a wicking fabric underneath?
I'm going to be out in the winter weather for several hours at nighttime. Obviously I want to stay warm so I've been reading on proper attire/gear for the conditions. The temperature will be around freezing (32° Fahrenheit). I have a pair of polypropylene thermals but I read that they don't wick moisture away. And moisture is the enemy of staying warm.
I personally don't care for polypropylene (I date back to the days when you could never get the body oils out in the wash, and they got pretty stinky by spring.) I prefer wicking poly, silk jersey, merino wool or a lightweight polarfleece or capilene as the first layer... but polypropylene should be fine at 32, especially if you're not doing heavy physical labor. Stay away from moisture retentive fabrics like cotton and linen.
Just remember to wear layers and start ventilating before you start to feel sweaty... a bit warmer than normal means it's time to unzip the coat a bit or slip off the hat.
Oh, and I strongly recommend wool socks in not too tight boots.
