What country is most responsible for the destruction of the Amazon rainforest?
According to Greenpeace, the USA is the greatest contributor to the destruction of the Amazon by contributing the most to global warming and trading in illegal logging of trees from the rainforest.

The Amazon is a very large carbon sink, but as it shrinks due to logging and fires caused by drought, it's absorbing less and less CO2.
Do you agree with Greenpeace's conclusions about the USA's contribution to the destruction of the rainforest, and what can we do to solve this problem?
I do partly agree with you especially regarding the Bush "bioethanol scheme" which will take a land previously exploited by illegal peasants who don´t own land and in turn will create their own agricultural land by... cutting down the rainforest.
But let´s NOT GIVE A SINGLE RESPONSABILITY.
Everybody in the world eating at Mc Donalds should know that the demand for their beef (mainly from Brazil) increases the demand for pastoral land there... leading to deforrestation.
And I don´t even want to mention the Indonesian plan for bioenergy which is as unsustainable as can be.
The only good news is that the forest coverage is increasing in the US, Europe, India and China.
In a successor to the Kyoto Protocol, countries (BRAZIL I AM LOOKING AT YOU) should be obliged to stop any deforestation and reforest to the 1990 levels at least.
