How do I stop former residents from rifling through my mailbox - is it tampering?
I purchased a house 3 months ago that had been vacant for about 6 months. My neighbours quickly told me that the old tenants (it was a rental before) still got there mail there - they would come look in the mailbox regularly and dump the remaining mail in the garden below. They continued to do this for a few weeks after we moved in.
NOW, they come to the door every couple of weeks looking for their mail. I have told them 4 or 5 times that I return all mail to sender that is not my own. My daughter noticed that they knock on the door and are already in their vehicle by the time we answer - as though they have already been rifling through our mailbox and are just knocking to cover their butts. We have noticed candy wrappers on our lawn below the mailbox once or twice a week, too.
I'm getting paranoid. I'm getting ticked off. What can I do to stop them? Is this illegal? Any suggestions to scare them off my property and out of my mailbox???
Go to the post office and make a FORMAL complaint. It is a federal crime to go into a mailbox that does not belong to you.
By law, your not even allowed to put a flyer inside a mailbox letting your neighbors know about a yard sale. The post office doesn't bother with you if you do but if someone complains they have to take action.
This is weird and scary. Call the police, get a restraining order... something. Good luck
