Why are my disposable plastic work gloves are turning pink after use?
I work at a sandwich shop, and we have to wear plastic, loose fitting, talc free gloves. I believe they are polyethylene, but i could be wrong. Anyway, after wearing them for a while, the gloves become pink stained. There is nothing on my hands (except sweat), and it seems to be coming from the inside. This does not occur with my coworkers. My hands are fine, so my conclusion is that it is perhaps a chemical reaction with my sweat and the gloves, but if so, then what chemical is in my sweat that is causing this?
Gloves made from plastic have various levels and types of stabilizers and antioxidants. Often, the resulting reaction from these additives is a discolored film. Pink and browning are common side effects of these antioxidants doing their job. The chemical substances in a persons hand sweat varies from person-to-person. You likely have a different pH level or mineral (metal) level in your sweat that reacts with these antioxidants. The glove is not dirty as a result and in fact, the staining should be only on the inside of the glove and not exposed to the food you are preparing. If you want to eliminate this aesthetic issue, you could use polyethylene (PE) gloves that are already colored and opaque or a latex or nitrile glove. Also, different brands of PE gloves may have other types of antioxidants and stabilizers that do not stain. Good luck!
